Reflections / Week 6 10th-14th February

Week 6 was eventful.
The Pestle & Mortar office was broken into this week. The intruders came in via our roof by making a small hole in it, enough for them to fit in. Not all the rooms in the office had an alarm system and the intruders were aware of this. They only broke into the rooms that were not bugged. Thankfully all that was stolen was some petty cash and camera equipment.

The aftermath of the break in
Like all the other employees, I was shocked to arrive to the office in such a state. In fact, I was one of the first people to enter the office that morning. The other interns and I agreed not to touch anything and waited for the bosses to arrive. To my shock, the bosses were surprisingly calm. They also managed to throw in a few jokes here and there.
I also took part in my second stock-take this week. The team and I finished much faster this week and even managed to go to two outlets in a day. This was thanks to Shaun, an intern's , idea of using bar code scanners instead of counting the products manually. Shaun's contribution to the team reminded me once again that I should always be thinking about ways to improve the company. I should never be satisfied with where I am because there is still so much more improvements that I could contribute to the team.

I also got the opportunity to join Danny New, the Retail Executive, for lunch. During the launch we exchanged stories to each other about our passions and what drives us towards our goals. Through the conversation, I found out about his passion for music and he found out about my passion for writing. Danny mentioned that the office could use someone with writing experience for an upcoming project. He said he would brief me about it during the weeks to come. Overall it was a productive lunch. There was not much business talk but it was good to connect with my boss as if he was a friend.
Week 6 Overview
Relating What you learn with your experience
Week 6 in Pestle & Mortar was a wake up call for me. First there was the break in and then the epiphany during the stock-take.I guess it was a reminder for me to not get too comfortable because the business world is an ever changing and past paced one. I realized that I need to be fast to react and open to change.
Observation
During week 6, I observed myself and how I have grown in Pestle & Mortar so far. There were a couple of things that I was happy with such as how my people relation skill were improving and how I have so far completed every task that I was given, but I observed certain thing that I could improve on as well such as attention to detail and consistency. I will try to work on it on the weeks to come.
Key Learning
After pondering about the break-in in Pestle & Mortar a bit more, I realized that how the bosses reacted to it played a big deal in how the entire team was affected by the break in. I would have believed that if the bosses were freaking out or were in a bad mood, such an aura would have influenced the entire team as well. But the Pestle & Mortar bosses kept their cool and instead, encouraged us to act as if everything was normal. From this I learnt to always keep my cool because there will come a time when an entire team is dependent on how I react to a situation.
Development & Growth
I slowly realized that even though this internship has added on to my knowledge of business and "book smartness", the most growth I have had so far throughout the internship is my personal growth. I have learned to be self motivated and to present myself professionally. The bosses have also pushed me to be a critical thinker by always questioning me on my work in good faith. The time that I have spent with my colleagues so far have been inspiring as they all have their own motivational story to tell. I'm slowly realizing that work isn't just about your job, but it is part of your identity as well.
Challenges Faced
The challenges I faced during week 6 was that I was feeling too comfortable in the office. It came to a point where I felt like I was no longer performing to the best of my capabilities. When my colleague , Shaun, came up with a faster way to carry out stock-takes, that was a wake up call for me. I remember feeling that I could have thought of that only if I had invested more time and shown more effort. Week 6 was a reminder to myself that I had to carry a mindset where I was always interested in improving and adding value to myself.
