Reflections Week 5 / 3rd - 7th February

By my 5th week in Pestle & Mortar, I was already feeling very comfortable with the company.
I had my basic training done and no longer needed to be told what to do.
The office implemented Formal Mondays for the very first time. This was their own twist to the usual Casual Friday rules that normal corporate offices had. As we are allowed to dress up casually on most days, the bosses thought it would be fun to get everyone dressed up on Mondays. Getting dressed up was also a good way start to the week.

During my 5th week, Pestle & Mortar received many "fresh" products for the Holiday collection from their manufacturers. They were planning on releasing these products to the public on that very week. This meant that quality control, tagging and packaging had to be done fast. However, while doing quality control, the other interns and I realized
that the products did not meet the quality requirements.

Uneven finishing at the end of the shirt
Colored thread being used for the stitching inside the shirt. The thread is suppose to follow the color of the shirt, which is this case is white.
The interns and I slowly noticed that a big portion of the products brought in were getting rejected and decided to voice it out to Eddie, the head of operations. He said that if more that 50% of the items were rejected, than the entire match could be rejected.
I also noticed that Pestle & Mortar did not have a proper, updated organizational chart. I volunteered to do it for them to the delight of my bosses.

Week 5 Overview
Relating What you learn with your experience
Week 5 was a pretty slow week for Pestle & Mortar. I think it was because Chinese New Year had ended and everyone was going back to their normal routines again. What I really enjoyed this week was getting to know everyone in the office a little better. As I was feeling more comfortable in the office environment, I started to open up more to my colleagues and it turned out that we had a couple of things in common.
Observations
I observed that there were many opportunities for me to learns something new in the office, all I needed to do was to ask. Take for example the organizational chart. If I hadn't had volunteered to do it, I don't think any of the bosses would have assigned it to me. Now that I did do it, I'm glad I did . I know that whenever another intern comes in after me, he or she will be using the organizational chart that I made. In some way,I know I made made a lasting contribution to Pestle & Mortar.
Key Learning
During week 5, I was asked by Mark, one of the partners, to do a background
research on Darren Choy, a fellow businessman. At first I found this
puzzling why Mark would be so interested in him but I later found out
that it was because Mark was having a business meeting with the
gentleman. That day I learnt a very important lesson from Mark. I learnt
to always research about a person before meeting him. That way, you get
the upper hand as you already understand his habits and personality
better. It is always better to come prepared and have more information
that to have none at all. Too much information never hurt anyone.
Key Achievements
My main achievement for Week 5 would be that I was finally comfortable in the company. Like I felt like I had a role and that I could fit into the mechanics of the business. For the first time, I didn't have to wait on to be given work. I just saw whatever that needed to be done and did it. This brought me some sense of accomplishment.
Challenges Faced
I don't think I was met with that many challenges this week. I think that in a way that it is good. It shows that I'm transitioning easier in the the company and the task that I'm given.
